We welcome students and researchers from diverse backgrounds who are interested in flow, transport, and environmental and energy systems. Most opportunities on this page do not include lab funding. Students and researchers with scholarships, fellowships, or support from their home institutions are welcome to discuss research fit with us.

Funded positions

Undergraduate research

Undergraduate students are welcome to contact us about research projects. A commitment of at least one semester is preferred so that students can become involved in ongoing work. Project arrangements are discussed individually.

Email your CV and a brief description of your interests to Dr. Yao, using “Undergrad [your name]” as the subject line.

Graduate study with external funding

Prospective M.S. and Ph.D. students with scholarships, fellowships, or other external support are welcome to discuss research fit with us. Please include your CV, research interests, funding arrangements, and preferred start term in your email. Use “M.S. [your name]” or “Ph.D. [your name]” as the subject line.

Students should apply to the Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate program and identify Yinuo (Noah) Yao as a potential advisor in their personal statement.

Postdoctoral researchers with external funding

We welcome inquiries from researchers supported by fellowships or other external funding. Please send your CV, a short description of your research experience and interests, and contact information for three references. Use “Postdoc [your name]” as the subject line.

Visiting scholars

Visiting scholars with support from their home institution or another source are welcome to discuss collaboration. Visits of at least six months, preferably one year, are encouraged. Please email your CV, research interests, proposed dates, and funding arrangements, using “Visiting [your name]” as the subject line.
